Over the years, playing card designs often deviated from the norm, and were used for political posturing, propaganda and advertising.

After the French royal family were sent to the guillotine during the Revolution, playing cards were adjusted to suit the sensibilities of the Republicans. The crowns were removed and replaced with hats!

By the 1800s the crowns had re-appeared and the revolutionary cards are now sought after rarities.
